Grandmother Achievement Day is February 11th

Big or small, this day is to celebrate all of your grandmother’s achievements throughout her life. It can be something small like perfecting her cookie recipe or something big like reaching a certain age. Today is a day to tell your grandmother how proud you are of her and all that she has done. 

History of the Word Grandma

Since the beginning of time, there has been grandparents, specifically grandmas. The use of the prefix “grand” dates back as early as the 13th century. This word is a variation of the French word graund. This is a translation of the latin term magnus. In Old English, the terms ealde and ieldra were used instead. The term for grandmas is also different in each country. Grandma is the most popular term used in many countries such as the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In other countries, particularly Canada, they use variations of this term such as Nan, Nana, Gran, and Granny. In India, grandmothers are called Nana and Nani. A person’s maternal grandmother is called Par-nana. There are various other names for grandmothers depending on the person and what both parties are comfortable with. In North America many people call their grandmothers by their ethnic names. For example, French grandmothers are called mamie. Some languages have a more specific kinship terminology than the English language to distinguish between maternal and paternal grandmothers. For example, in Sweedish there is not a single word for grandmother but most use the term mormor for their grandmothers.Whatever the term you use, this day is a day of celebration of the grandmother or grandmothers in your life.
