Celebrating Nature: January Earth & Environment Holidays

Celebrating Nature: January Earth & Environment Holidays
Body First

Ah, January. The first breath of the new year, crisp and full of promise. The earth seems to hold its breath as we tiptoe into its embrace, snow crunching underfoot or raindrops dancing on windows. This is the perfect month to reconnect with nature’s quiet resilience and celebrate the beauty it so generously offers. Let me share my journey through this winter wonderland, and how I’ve grown to love some of January’s most magical tree and plant days.

Tree Days: Roots to the Sky

Trees are my grounding force and my dreamers' perch. Every tree has its own poetry, and January, it seems, has carved out moments to honor a few of them.

Apple Tree Day (January 6)

The apple tree. When I think of it, I’m whisked back to sunny afternoons spent climbing gnarled branches and stealing bites of tart, sun-warmed fruit. Apple trees embody a balance of giving and steadfastness. They gift us pies, ciders, and the simple joy of watching blossoms turn to fruit. On this day, I bake a rustic apple tart and toast to this tree’s enduring spirit.

Banyan Tree Day (January 17)

The banyan is a storyteller, its roots weaving tales through generations. Under its expansive canopy, I’ve found shade and solace. It’s the kind of tree that demands respect, its aerial roots reminding us that strength comes from reaching out as much as from digging deep. On this day, I light a candle and meditate beneath my houseplant version of this mighty tree, imagining its vast, ancient cousins thriving in far-off lands.

Coconut Tree Day (January 24)

The coconut tree is a symbol of resilience, thriving where others might falter. I love the versatility of the coconut: water, milk, oil, and the sweetest sun-soaked memories. For me, Coconut Tree Day is an invitation to make a tropical-inspired meal: coconut curry simmering on the stove, bringing the aroma of sun-kissed shores into my chilly home.

Pando Tree Day (January 27)

Pando, the quaking aspen grove in Utah, isn’t just one tree but a single organism spanning 106 acres. Imagine that! It’s a gentle reminder that we’re all connected. On Pando Tree Day, I find myself drawn to quiet reflection. I’ll take a snowy walk in my local woods, marveling at how even the bare branches seem to hum with life beneath the surface.

Celebrating Earth and Plant Days

January doesn’t stop at trees—it’s a whole bouquet of plant love!

Houseplant Appreciation Day (January 10)

I confess: my houseplants are like family. On this day, I pamper them. I clean their leaves, repot the ones that need extra room, and shower them with gratitude. They’re my winter green, reminding me that life persists even when the world outside sleeps.

International Flower Day (January 19)

Flowers may be sparse this time of year, but that’s all the more reason to honor their beauty. I arrange a vase with dried lavender, eucalyptus, and maybe a bright winter rose if I’m lucky. It’s my way of bringing the promise of spring indoors.

Daisy Day (January 28)

Daisies are the friendliest flowers. They’re the bloom equivalent of a cheery wave from a neighbor. On Daisy Day, I doodle daisy chains in my journal and reflect on their symbolism of innocence and hope. These little flowers remind me to look for joy in the simple things.

Carnation Day (January 29)

Carnations have always been my grandmother’s favorite flower, so this day is special. I’ll pick up a bunch, their ruffled petals as lovely as a cherished memory, and place them in the center of my table. Carnations remind me of enduring love—steady, vibrant, and deeply rooted.

Awareness and Action: Caring for the Earth

January also feels like a good time to deepen my connection with the environment. This month, I focus on little changes that ripple outward. I’ve swapped single-use plastics for reusable alternatives, learned more about sustainable diets, and pledged to join a local cleanup event. Awareness begins with small, mindful actions such as choosing to recycle, compost, or even just switching off lights when I leave a room.

And let’s not forget that January is also Deserts and Dunes Month, a time to honor the often-overlooked ecosystems of arid lands. Deserts are teeming with life and resilience, from succulents storing water to nocturnal creatures thriving in extreme conditions. This month, I’m exploring documentaries and articles about desert conservation, marveling at their unique beauty, and learning how to support these fragile environments.

January’s Astronomical Marvels

As an earth and tree lover, I can't help but marvel at the universe that brings us such a beautiful planet. The January night sky is a spectacle that fills me with wonder. This month brings us the Quadrantid meteor shower, peaking around January 3-4, with its brilliant, short-lived streaks of light. The Wolf Moon, January’s full moon, casts an ethereal glow on the landscape, reminding us of the cycles that govern life on Earth. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of planets like Venus and Saturn shining brightly in the early evening sky. Stargazing in the crisp winter air is a humbling reminder of our place in the vast universe and the interconnectedness of all things.

January's Winter may seem like a dormant time, but beneath its surface lies a quiet energy, waiting to awaken. Let January’s tree and plant days inspire you to cherish the earth’s gifts, celebrate its beauty, and nurture its resilience. Here’s to a year of living in harmony with the world around us.
