Celebrating Nature: March Earth & Environment Holidays

Celebrating Nature: March Earth & Environment Holidays
Body First

March is when the earth begins to stretch and yawn, shaking off its winter slumber. There’s a feeling of renewal in the air, with buds swelling on branches and the scent of fresh soil hinting at the life to come. This month, I find myself drawn to trees, plants, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Let’s dive into March’s natural wonders, one story at a time.

Tree Days: Guardians of Growth

Trees anchor my soul, and March’s tree celebrations feel like little gifts from nature’s calendar.

Kowhai Tree Day (March 2)

The Kowhai tree, with its golden blossoms, is a beacon of beauty. Native to New Zealand, it’s often the first to signal spring. On Kowhai Tree Day, I find myself drawn to yellows, wearing a bright scarf and imagining the delicate flowers swaying in a southern breeze. Its nectar is beloved by birds, and I feel a kinship with its role as a provider.

Kumquat Tree Day (March 6)

Kumquats are like little orbs of sunshine. Their trees are as joyful as the fruit they bear, reminding me that sweetness can come in the smallest packages. On this day, I slice a kumquat in half, savor its tangy zest, and toast to the resilience of citrus trees thriving against the odds.

Live Oak Tree Day (March 17)

Live oaks are the sentinels of the South, their sprawling branches draped in Spanish moss creating natural cathedrals. On Live Oak Tree Day, I’ll wander beneath one, imagining the centuries it’s witnessed. There’s a quiet wisdom in these trees, a reminder to stand tall and adapt.

Brazil Nut Tree Day (March 24)

The Brazil nut tree is a giant among trees, reaching into the canopy of the Amazon. Its nuts sustain wildlife and people alike. On this day, I crack open a handful of Brazil nuts and reflect on the importance of protecting rainforests. This tree is a symbol of how nature’s bounty can nourish us all.

Yucca Tree Day (March 27)

The yucca tree, with its striking form and spiky leaves, feels like a sculpture carved by the desert winds. It thrives in tough conditions, teaching me that beauty exists even in the harshest environments. Today, I’ll sketch a yucca tree, its resilience inspiring my own.

Cherry Blossom Tree Day (March 29)

Cherry blossoms are pure magic, their fleeting beauty a reminder to cherish the moment. On this day, I’ll celebrate with a picnic beneath a blooming tree (if the timing is right) letting the petals drift around me like confetti from the earth itself. Taking pictures or pulling up pictures from the last cherry blossoms keeps these precious fleeting blooms close to my heart.

Celebrating Agriculture and Plant Days

March is brimming with opportunities to honor the plants that sustain and uplift us.

Plant Power Day (March 7)

Plant Power Day is all about celebrating the incredible energy plants bring to our lives. From leafy greens to legumes, they fuel our bodies and brighten our world. I’ll whip up a plant-based feast today, marveling at the diversity of flavors grown from the soil.

Plant a Flower Day (March 12)

There’s something healing about planting flowers, tucking seeds into the earth and watching them grow. On this day, I’ll kneel in my garden and plant a mix of marigolds and daisies, eager for the color they’ll bring to my spring.

Flower Day (March 21)

The spring equinox brings Flower Day, a celebration of blossoms in all their forms. I’ll gather a bouquet of wildflowers (or dried ones if spring hasn’t quite arrived) and place it on my table as a reminder of nature’s artistry.

Agriculture Awareness Days

March is a time to honor the stewards of the land with several Ag Days this month. Farmers nourish us and the earth with their labor and care. I’ll make a point to visit a local farmer’s market and support their work, carrying their stories home with my fresh produce.

Awareness and Action: Caring for the Earth in March

March invites us to deepen our connection with the environment. Whether it’s starting a compost bin or switching to reusable products, small actions make a big difference. This month, I’m focusing on learning about regenerative agriculture and how it helps restore the soil’s vitality. The earth needs our care, and I’m committed to doing my part.

Glaciers Month

Glaciers hold the history of our planet in their icy depths, but they’re melting at an alarming rate. March’s focus on glaciers reminds us of the urgent need to address climate change. I’ll spend time reading about conservation efforts and support organizations working to protect these frozen treasures.

March’s Astronomical Events

The night sky in March is a theater of change. The Spring Equinox on March 21 marks the balance of light and dark, a turning point in the year’s rhythm. Venus continues to shine as the “Evening Star,” and the Worm Moon on March 25 brings a sense of renewal, its name tied to the thawing ground and the life stirring within. Stargazing this month feels especially meaningful, as the cosmos mirrors the earth’s awakening.

March is a month of growth, beauty, and connection. Whether through trees, plants, or the stars above, it invites us to celebrate life in all its forms. Let’s welcome spring with open hearts and gratitude for the wonders of earth and sky.
