May the Flavors Be With You: A Foodie’s Guide to the Month of May Celebrations

A Foodie’s Guide to the Month of May Celebrations
Body First

Ah, May. The month when spring flirts with summer, gardens burst with color, and our taste buds throw confetti parties. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I’ve made it my mission to eat, bake, and sip my way through every quirky, glorious holiday this month has to offer.

This is your guide to celebrating May like it’s a five-star feast! 🍽️

May 1st: Chocolate Parfaits & Cosmic Cravings

We kick things off with Chocolate Parfait Day, because why wait for dessert when you can start the month with layers of creamy, crunchy, chocolatey joy? I piled mine high with whipped cream, fresh berries, and a sprinkle of edible glitter because why not?

This is an awesome dessert to make with kids or for a romantic couples dessert night!

May 3rd: National Doughnut Day

I’ll be at the bakery at dawn, grabbing a maple-bacon number and a coffee to fuel my sugar-fueled daydreams. 🍤🍩

Try some different varieties, or make some at home!

May 4th: Star Wars Day

I'll be baking some “Wookiee Cookies” (chocolate-chip with M&Ms) and pretending my coffee mug says “May the Froth Be With You.”

You can also combine this day with National Doughnut Day and make "Death Star Donuts"

May 5th: Cinco de Mayo – A Fiesta in Every Bite

Cinco de Mayo is my annual excuse to wear a sombrero, blast mariachi music, and eat until my pants button surrenders. This year, I’m hosting a Taco Night Extravaganza: crispy carnitas, mango-lime guacamole, and a deconstructed tres leches cake bar.

Pro tip: Dip churros in melted dark chocolate and sprinkle them with chili flakes. It’s basically a spiritual experience. 🌮🌶️

For Couples, this is a night to cook a romantic dinner of enchiladas verdes and flan, paired with margaritas, of course!

May 7th: Herb Day – Grow, Snip, Savor

This is the perfect day to plant the herb garden you have been wanting to start! I’ll be elbow-deep in soil today, planting basil, rosemary, and thyme in mason jars. Later, I’ll whip up a Herb-Infused Butter to slather on grilled corn (trust me, it’s dripping with honeyed nostalgia). If you’re feeling fancy, blend fresh parsley into chimichurri and drizzle it over crispy fries. Nature’s seasoning cabinet is open! 🌿🧈

May 10th: Shrimp Day – Dive Into the Deep End

Time to channel my inner seafood lover. I’m grilling lemon-garlic shrimp skewers and pairing them with coconut curry rice. For a twist, I’ll make Shrimp & Grits for breakfast (yes, it’s a thing).

Host a “Build-Your-Own Shrimp Taco” bar with toppings like mango salsa and avocado crema.

2nd Sunday in May – Mother’s Day (US)

Let kids cook breakfast in bed with pancakes, fruit skewers, and a handmade card. Oh, no kids or grown kids? It's a perfect day to bake that unique recipe you've been wanting to share with your mom. Or make your mom's favorite recipe as a reminder of your own youth.

May 12th: Nutty Fudge Day – The Chocolate Revolution

Fudge is the ultimate comfort food, and today I’m going full mad scientist. I’m swirling peanut butter into dark chocolate, pressing in candied pecans, and hiding M&Ms inside for a “fudge bomb” surprise. Serve with a glass of cold milk and a movie marathon. You’re welcome. 🍫💣

May 15th: Chocolate Chip Day – A Love Letter to the Cookie

Today, I’m baking a Chocolate Chip Tart with a salted caramel drizzle. Why? Because chocolate chips deserve to graduate from cookies to gourmet desserts. Later, I’ll host a “Build-Your-Own Cookie Sundae Bar” with friends—vanilla ice cream, crushed Oreos, and sprinkles for days. 🍪🍨

May 16th: Pizza Party Day – Cheese, Meet Joy

Pizza is my love language, and today I’m hosting a DIY Pizza Night . I’ll set out dough, sauces, and toppings like prosciutto, fig jam, and arugula. Bonus: I’m baking mini pizzas in cast-iron skillets for that crispy, caramelized crust. Pair with a bold red wine and call it a date night. 🍕🍷

May 20th: World Bee Day – Sweetness & Light

Honey deserves its own holiday, and today I’m celebrating bees by drizzling honey all over Greek yogurt, ricotta toast, and even grilled peaches. I’ll also plant wildflowers in my garden to thank our fuzzy pollinators. Later, I’ll sip Honey-Lavender Iced Tea while reading The Secret Life of Bees . 🐝🌼

May 21st: Strawberries & Cream Day + International Tea Day

This day is pure nostalgia. I’m slicing strawberries, whipping cream, and layering them into a trifle with sponge cake and a splash of Grand Marnier. For a twist, I’ll freeze strawberry slices in ice cube trays with mint to add to my tea for a summer-ready taste of pure yumminess. 🍓🍨

May 25th: Blueberry Cheesecake Day – The Crown Jewel

I’m baking Mini Cheesecakes in mason jars today—creamy, tangy, and topped with blueberry compote. For a showstopper, I’ll pipe whipped cream into clouds and nestle fresh berries on top. Serve with a candle and a birthday-song serenade for no reason at all. 🎂

May 30th: Mint Julep Day – Southern Belle Vibes

Even if I’m not at the Kentucky Derby, I’m sipping mint juleps on my porch swing today. For a non-alcoholic twist, I'll create a “Mocktail Julep” with mint, lemonade, sparkling water served over crushed ice. Pair with cucumber sandwiches and pretend my life is this cool everyday! 🌿

May 31st: Macaroon Day – Coconut’s Moment to Shine

I’ll close the month with Coconut Macaroons, dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. For a modern twist, I'll add a raspberry filling. Serve with a cappuccino and declare May officially perfect. ☕🍪

🌱 Monthly Themes for Food Lovers

May’s month-long observances invite deeper engagement with food fun.

Barbecue Month: Share your favorite barbecue recipe.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Make homemade dumplings or spring rolls.

National Burger Month: Host a “Burger Taste-Off” with different toppings each night.

American Cheese Month: Plan a cheese-and-wine night with artisanal varieties.

Gardening for Wildlife Month: Plant a “pollinator-friendly” vegetable garden (e.g., sunflowers, zucchini).

      Food Outings to Explore

      • Visit a strawberry or asparagus farm for picking (May 24 – Asparagus Day).
      • Attend a food truck festival or wine-and-dine event .
      • Explore a farm-to-table restaurant for seasonal menus.

How to Celebrate May’s Food Magic with Loved Ones

      1. Host a “Holiday Potluck”: Assign each guest a May food holiday to represent in a dish.
      2. Try One New Recipe a Week: Challenge your family to cook global dishes (e.g., Thai curry or Ethiopian injera).
      3. Grow Something Together: Plant herbs, veggies, or edible flowers in pots or a backyard garden.
      4. Support Local: Shop at farmers’ markets or dine at family-owned restaurants.

The May Mindset: Eat Like You Mean It

May is a month of yes . Yes to second helpings, yes to messy kitchens, and yes to dancing barefoot in the pantry while eating cookie dough. Whether you’re grilling burgers for Barbecue Month, celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month with dumplings, or baking a Mother’s Day cake covered in frosting roses, let your taste buds lead the way.

So grab a spoon, a friend, and a sense of adventure. May is a feast waiting to happen—and I’ll be right there with you, licking the bowl clean. 🌈🍴
