Rise Up Day: inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou
Body First

"You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise." - Dr. Maya Angelou, Still I Rise

Rise Up Day is a celebration of Dr. Maya Angelou's inspiration in her powerful writings including the poem, Still I Rise. In this iconic work, she declares that neither prejudice nor the limitations imposed by society will ever dictate her worth or her success. With each line, Still I Rise defies oppression and speaks to the strength within us all to rise above the injustices of the world. This poem is not only her personal testament of unbreakable spirit but a call to everyone to stand tall, to live beyond the boundaries of society’s expectations, and to embrace their own power. On Rise Up Day, we honor this enduring message of resilience and the courage it takes to keep rising, no matter what.

Inspirational Holiday - Rise Up Day - April 4

Rise Up Day was selected as an Inspiration Holiday to showcase Angelou's message of rising above adversity, to connect with others who share their own stories of rising up and to remind us to have empathy for others who hardships may be different from our own. It is a day to keep your head up and rise above the hardships, opposition, and those trying to silence you.

As a single mom who has encountered many hardships, like so many other women and those whose voices have felt overlooked, I connected with Dr. Angelou’s words and her strong spirit to rise up, no matter the circumstances. The importance of taking the anger of feeling oppressed in situations, and turning it into an inner strength and resiliance and still rise despite all opposition, is a message worth its own holiday!

Dr. Maya Angelou Inspires Women and Generations Worldwide

Maya Angelou was, and still is, a guiding light. Through her words, she has empowered people to confront their past and embrace their strength. Her poetry and memoirs open our hearts to empathy, teaching us to be unashamed of our unique struggles and triumphs. Maya Angelou spoke to women, minorities, and anyone who faced hardship, showing them how to turn pain into power.

Her words uplift generations by teaching us that we can be more than the hardships we’ve endured. She encouraged us to own our voices, fight for justice, hold our heads high and rise up. In her famous poem, Still I Rise, she speaks of rising against ridicule, prejudice, and oppression. For women especially, this message of self-love, resilience, and pride in our identity has been deeply transformative.

My First Encounter with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

The first time I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I was drawn in by Dr. Angelou’s courage in sharing her story with such honesty and vulnerability. I felt both a sense of comfort in hearing a woman's story of overcoming hardships, and a strong empathy for those hardships. While I am not a black woman, I connected fully with the oppression of sexism and other oppressions I have faced. I fell in love with the concept of the title in understanding the voice that remains through oppression.

Through her experiences, she reminded me that no one’s life is perfect, that we all carry scars, and that sharing our struggles can free us from the shame they may hold. She reminded me that we don’t have to be defined by our past but can instead use it to create strength within ourselves. This powerful message is part of the inspiration for Rise Up Day, so others might take a moment to acknowledge their own resilience and strength.

The Impact of Still I Rise

Still I Rise affected me deeply as a woman and a single mom, giving me a profound reminder of empowerment during some of the most challenging moments in my life. Each line felt like a reminder that, despite the hardships and judgments that can come from being a single mother, I am worthy of pride, hope, and joy. Dr. Angelou’s defiance of society’s expectations resonated with me personally, as I’ve faced the pressures of balancing responsibilities, providing for my children, and proving to myself and others that I am enough.

Her words give you the permission to stand tall, even when you feel weighed down by expectations and doubt. The resilience she expressed in Still I Rise helped me find strength to navigate the difficult days with grace and determination. As a single mom, I found a companion in Angelou’s words, a reminder that my journey, though sometimes tough and lonely, is one of courage, and that, like her, I can rise above any challenge with dignity and resilience.

Still I Rise is an anthem for anyone who has ever been pushed down and dared to stand back up. Dr. Angelou’s strength is infectious; her message reminds us that every challenge we face can make us stronger.
