Alaska Day celebrates Alaska becoming a territory of the United States in 1867. It had previously been owned by Russia. On October 18th, 1867, the Russian flag in Sitka, Alaska was replaced by the American flag. Today, celebrations are held in Sitka, Alaska each year. The month of October leading up to Alaska day has many events to kick off the celebration. On October 18th, the celebrating reaches full force with a ball and a parade among many other events.
