National Heroes Day

National Heroes' Day is a public holiday in the Bahamas celebrated on the second Monday in October honoring the people who have contributed to the Bahamas becoming a free and independent state. National Heroes' Day is a day to celebrate all those who served in the past and who are currently serving the country and the people of the country. 

National Heroes' Day replaced Discovery Day (Columbus Day) in 2013, which was celebrated on October 12 to commemorate Christopher Columbus. The Bahamas changed the name to honor Heroes instead and cut ties with the controversy over celebrating Columbus and the negative affects on the indigenous people.
