Samhain

Samhain is a festival that was originally celebrated by the ancient Celts in many European countries, including Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. It marks the transition between the year's lighter and darker halves, and is considered a time of transformation and the desire to invoke the supernatural. Samhain celebrations begin on the evening of October 31 and last through November 1.

Some traditions associated with Samhain include:

• Mumming and guising: People would go from house to house in costume or disguise, usually reciting songs or verses in exchange for food.
• Opened burial mounds: These were considered to be portals to the spirit world. 

Many modern Halloween traditions originate from Samhain, including the wearing of costumes and masks to ward off harmful spirits.

• Costumes and Disguises: People wore costumes and masks to disguise themselves from wandering spirits.
• Offerings and Feasts: Food and drink were left out for the spirits of ancestors, and feasts were held to honor them.

Modern Celebrations

• Halloween: Many modern Halloween traditions, such as trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins (originally turnips), and wearing costumes, have roots in Samhain customs.
• Neo-Paganism and Wicca: Samhain is a significant festival in modern Pagan and Wiccan traditions, celebrated with rituals, feasts, and ceremonies to honor the dead and the changing seasons.

Symbols of Samhain

• Pumpkins and Jack-o'-Lanterns: Originally, turnips were carved with faces to ward off evil spirits, but the tradition evolved to pumpkins.
• Apples: Used in divination and games, apples are a symbol of the harvest.
• Black and Orange: These colors represent the dark of night and the glow of fire, respectively.

Samhain is a time of reflection, honoring ancestors, and embracing the cyclical nature of life and death. It is a deeply spiritual festival that has influenced many contemporary celebrations and continues to be observed by those who follow ancient Celtic traditions.
