Holidays & Observances in Senegal

Senegal is a country in western Africa. It is divided into several different cultural groups, each of which has its own strong customs and traditions. Islam is the main religion and its holidays are important, but individual celebrations such as weddings and births are just as if not more important to the Senegalese people. Music, especially percussion, is an important part of Senegal’s culture, and therefore is present at every celebration. Griots, or West African storytellers, and also an important part of the holidays. No celebration is considered complete without them.
