Walk Your Dog Month

January is Walk Your Dog Month

Also known as National Dog Walking Month or Pet Walking Month

What better way to start your New Year than by getting out and walking with your dog. While you may have resolved in the New Year to get more exercise and be more fit, don't forget about your dog. The health and happiness benefits of walking together is reason enough to make this month a Walk Your Dog Month.

Walking Your Dog Tips

  • If your dog has not been taking lots of walks, be sure your dog is healthy and able to go the distance with you.
  • For cold weather regions, you can still have fun on a walk with your dog. Just be sure to protect your dog's feet from the elements and make sure your dog is warm enough.
  • For hot weather regions, be sure to bring a water bottle and dish so you can hydrate your dog on long walks.
  • Walking with your dog is a perfect time to teach so be sure to bring treats to reward good behavior.
  • Don't forget the doggie bags for doggie poop cleanup along the way!
  • To be safe, wear bright colors on both you and your dog (leash, collar or clothing)
  • For safety, if you are walking at night, stay in areas that are well lit and safe.
  • Make it a bonding experience where your focus is on your time with your dog.
  • Don't try to push the distance on the first walk. Start with shorter walks and build up to longer walks. Keep an eye on your dog and understand your dog's limits.
  • Change up the path, drive to parks and take walks, walk with others and give your dog a more vibrant experience.
