Malignant Hypertthermia Awareness & Training Month
March is Malignant Hyperthermia Awareness & Training Month. Malignant Hyperthermia is often experienced by people undergoing what they expect to be a routine surgery. However, it can also happen to people outside of the operating room. Malignant Hyperthermia is a genetic disorder found in about 1 of 2,000 people. Once it is triggered, the rapid chain events induces a body temperature of up to 107 degrees, muscle rigidity, system-wide organ failure, and, if untreated, possibly death. MH is a rare occurrence, but if untreated, its mortality rate is high. Treatment drugs and advances in understanding this disease continue to save lives ever since MH was first noted in the 1960s.
