Bat Appreciation Month

October is Bat Appreciation Month

Do you remember the last time you were thankful for bats? Many people don't. That's why October is Bat Appreciation Month! There are over 1,300 species of bats, and all of them have important jobs. Some are pollinators, some control insect populations, and some help disperse seeds to help restore damaged or cleared rainforest plants.

Without bats, we'd be in pretty bad shape. They are considered a "keystone species" in many ecosystems. This means that without them, the entire chain would crumble. Without their pollination and seed dispersion, the bases of these ecosystems would collapse and bring the entire food chain down with them.

Don't let the myths surrounding these little mammals spook you, they're incredibly important.
