Thanksgiving. The holiday name itself says it all. It's a day to Give Thanks.

Thanksgiving has always been a holiday steeped in tradition, and yet, as we embrace a more inclusive, thoughtful society, we’re given a beautiful opportunity to redefine what this day means. Instead of focusing on historical events, many of us are reframing Thanksgiving as a modern celebration of gratitude, an inclusive gathering that honors the present rather than dwelling on a complicated past.

This new approach to Thanksgiving is simple: it’s about taking time to appreciate the blessings in our lives, strengthening connections with loved ones, and savoring joy, no matter who we are or where we come from. And its about creating new traditions, keeping some of the old, and making Thanksgiving a day that resonates with you.

For me, Thanksgiving has shifted from the rituals and myths I grew up with to something more meaningful and deeply personal. It’s no longer about reenacting stories from the past; instead, it’s a day for celebrating the incredible diversity around us and honoring the people who fill our lives with warmth and laughter. I want this Thanksgiving to be about gratitude, for the big things, the little things, and everything in between. For the friends who feel like family, the family who shows up even when it's hard, the mentors who guide us, and the communities that welcome us.

Taking this approach also makes the holiday accessible to everyone. Thanksgiving can be a holiday that crosses the boundaries of race, religion, and background because gratitude itself is universal. There is nothing more unifying than coming together to appreciate our shared experiences and uplift one another, especially during times of hardship. In this spirit, Thanksgiving becomes a time to celebrate all that unites us.

 

Creating New Traditions and Celebrations

To truly embrace Thanksgiving as a celebration of gratitude, I’ve been experimenting with new traditions that feel less tied to outdated narratives and more in sync with the values of mindfulness, joy, and connection. The meal, of course, is still central, but now, I see it as an open invitation to gather, whether you’re with family, friends, neighbors, or even colleagues.

The table itself becomes a symbol of inclusivity. For me, I love the traditional turkey dinner and only eat it once a year, however, it doesn't have to be about the Turkey!  I love inviting people to prepare a dish that means something to them, be it an old family recipe or a favorite comfort food, turning the meal into a true feast of diverse flavors and stories.

While the day has traditionally been about family, the modern celebration of the day is about the family we create, the people around us who lift us up, not tear us down. The day is about celebrating your circle, lifting others up, giving, sharing, feasting together and being grateful for all of it!

One of my favorite ideas is to have a gratitude circle with those who want to participate. Remember, part of being grateful is being grateful for those who have different ideas and may not want to do the circle! And it doesn't have to be a literal circle!

This isn't a new tradition, but one that has earned a place in the modern celebrations. Before diving into the turkey, pie, or whatever else graces the table, or at the table, everyone takes a moment to share something they’re thankful for. It’s a grounding exercise that shifts the focus from material aspects to the things that truly matter. Hearing friends and family express their gratitude reminds me just how precious these connections are and sets a positive, warm tone for the celebration.

I also love the idea of making Thanksgiving more outwardly focused by engaging in acts of kindness. Volunteering, donating food, or simply checking in on someone who might be feeling lonely can bring so much meaning to the holiday. This approach turns Thanksgiving into a day of active compassion, connecting us not just with those we know, but with the broader community around us.

 

Bringing Joy into the Season

While Thanksgiving can be reflective, it’s also a time for joy. This holiday isn't about being somber or overly serious in your gratitude. It doesn't have to be about visiting relatives who upset us or create divisiveness. It is about celebrating joy and togetherness with fun, laughter and of course, lots of food (and drinks)! 

The act of being thankful is, at its heart, joyful! So, I’m all about celebrating in ways that bring laughter and lightness to the day. Whether it’s playing silly games, watching a favorite movie, or engaging in activities that share gratitude, try to make a point to fill the day with moments that make everyone laugh and feel at ease.

Modern Thanksgiving celebrations are about creating this environment where people feel they can come as they are, without the pressure to look or act a certain way. When we focus on gratitude, we free ourselves from the need for a “perfect” holiday; instead, we celebrate the beauty of what is real and present in our lives, embracing imperfections and finding joy in the simplest moments.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from celebrating a new modern Thanksgiving, it’s that gratitude is transformative. When I take time to reflect on all the goodness around me with those who share positive vibes, my perspective shifts. Problems feel more manageable, worries lessen, and the things I have outweigh the things I lack. Thanksgiving, in its reimagined form, has become a time to honor this mindset, one that I can carry beyond the holiday itself.

As we move forward and shape our traditions for future generations, I hope that this modern Thanksgiving becomes a lasting reminder of what it means to live with a grateful heart. Whether that’s through gathering with loved ones, sharing a meal, or reaching out to make someone’s day a little brighter, the spirit of Thanksgiving can inspire us all to appreciate the here and now. Because, in the end, gratitude isn’t just a feeling; it’s a way of living.

This year, I’m inviting everyone to join me in letting go of what no longer serves us and embracing a new meaning for Thanksgiving. Let’s celebrate with gratitude, joy, and the open-hearted togetherness that this day can be about. After all, Thanksgiving is more than a holiday, it’s a chance to appreciate our shared humanity and look forward with hope and joy.

Express Appreciation for the people in your life
Take a moment to tell your loved ones how much you appreciate them. Share specific reasons why you are grateful for their presence in your life. 

Communicate with gratitude by sending Emails, Social Message or call or video chat. 
If you can't get to a gathering, make a point of reaching out to let family members and people who are close to you know you are grateful for them being in your life. This is also a perfect way to choose not to go to a family get-together with those who divide, and opting instead to send your love. 

Share Stories
Encourage family and friends to share stories of gratitude or fond memories from the past. It can create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere.

Acts of Kindness
Perform random acts of kindness throughout the week, such as helping a neighbor, holding the door for someone, or paying for someone's coffee. Small acts can change the world by showing others consideration. 

Host a Gratitude Circle
During your Thanksgiving gathering, gather everyone and have each person share something they are grateful for. It's a simple yet meaningful tradition. 

Create a Gratitude Journal
Begin a gratitude journal and write down things you're thankful for and pass it to the next person in your group or circle of family and friends. This is a great way to remember Thanksgiving from year to year and check in on those who you are grateful for. Reflecting on these entries can help maintain a positive mindset.

Find the Good in People
Thanksgiving can be a time where family conflicts arise. Rather than allow negative conflicts to arise and arguing over differences in beliefs and values, find something that you love in each person you interact with. Change your brain to see the things you have in common and not the negative differences.  

Be Thankful for the things you have
Rather than worrying about what you don't have, make a list of all the things you do have in your life. Consider how much better your life is and how much more you have than many people across the world. 

Reflect on the Year and Look for the things to be Grateful for
Go through your journals, pictures and accomplishments of the year and reflect on the gratitude for the opportunities you have had and appreciate yourself for what you have achieved.

The awesom thing about celebrating various holidays today is that you can choose how to celebrate. You can choose to keep it traditional, skip it altogether, protest it in favor of Native American Day, or reframe it to fit your life.
