Australia Day is the National Day of Australia and celebrates the landing of the first fleet of British ships on what is now Sydney Harbor in 1788. This led to the first British colony in Australia and eventually Britain’s ownership of the entire island. It is one of the oldest holidays celebrated in the country with observances beginning in the early 1800s. Today Australia Day is a chance to celebrate national pride.
