He was trying to create a pen that could write underwater, and after many failed attempts, he finally came up with a design that worked. The ballpoint pen quickly became popular due to its durability and convenience. June 10, 1943 is the day the patent was filed for this pen that would replace the quill and fountain pens. This cleaner and easier alternative quickly took hold and is a staple in our society today.
