Cat Day is February 22nd

Cat Day is the day to have cat-themed fun! The original Cat Day started in Japan in 1987, known as "Neko no Hi", and was chosen to be on February 22nd because the date's numbers 2/22 (ni ni ni) sounds kind of like the words we use for cat sounds, "meow meow meow", or "nyan nyan nyan" in Japanese. This day has been growing worldwide due to the social media frenzy of showing off the most adorable cats. 

What to do on Cat Day

While there are other days dedicated to the welfare of cats (International Cat Day), Cat Day is solely dedicated to having fun in your cat's honor!

• Dress up like a cat
• Draw Cat pictures
• Play with your cat
• Tease your cat
• Get funny videos or pictures of your cat

• Find a cat cafe and enjoy a drink or snack surrounded by cats

• Disney in Japan started promoting Cat Day as "Marie Day," after the young female character from the Aristocats

• Cat Day has helped to create celebrity cats in Japan, notably on social media sites. 

• According to a poll by ModernCat, cat ownership is most popular in Russia where 57 percent of the population have a cat living with them. Next is France with 41%, followed by the U.S. with 39%. 

• On Aoshima, one of the famous remote "cat islands" in Japan, cats ournumber humans 6 to 1, making is a popular tourist spot for cat lovers.
