Feral Cat Day was founded in 2001 by the organization Alley Cat Allies, a leading advocacy group for the protection of cats, especially those living outdoors in feral or stray colonies. Alley Cat Allies created this day as a way to bring attention to the issues surrounding feral cats and to highlight humane methods of population control, such as TNR. In 2017, the day was renamed Global Cat Day to reflect its growing international reach.

The idea behind TNR is to trap feral cats, spay or neuter them, and then return them to their outdoor homes, preventing further reproduction while allowing them to live out their lives. This approach has been proven to be more effective and compassionate than attempting to euthanize feral cat populations.

A feral cat is a non-domestic cat that was born in the wild and lives outside. Most often they are found in groups or colonies. Feral cats typically do not socialize with humans except to scrap for food around human establishments. They are typically scared of humans since they are on their own from birth. 

If you see feral cats in your neighborhood, it can help them by reporting them to a Trap, Neuter, Release program in your area. it is best not to approach them since they will be skittish around humans. These programs help the cat by humanely catching and treating with medical care and neutering so that they can be released and live healthier lives. It can also help prevent the numbers from growing which can cause problems with wildlife and health issues.
