The Origins of Giant Sequoia Tree Day

Giant Sequoia Tree Day was created by Patti Jewel and the HolidaySmart Visionary Team. With a team of tree lovers, they decided that there were not enough days to celebrate Trees. The Epic Tree Holidays began with an epic tree being named each month. 

Why July 17?

Mid-July is ideal to celebrate giant sequoias when the summer sun illuminates their soaring trunks and highlights the deep red tones of their bark. Giant Sequoia Tree Day encourages appreciation for Earth’s monumental natural treasures.

All About the Giant Sequoia

Giant sequoia are the most massive epic trees on Earth with the tallest tree measuring 311 feet. They are long living trees with the oldest known tree dating over 3200 years old. 

Sequoias, are in the genus Sequoiadendron giganteum along with the Giant Redwoods. The difference is in the trunk where the giant sequoia has an immense trunk with very slight taper and the redwood has a more slender trunk. The sequoia is the largest tree by volume and the redwood is the tallest tree. 

The Giant Sequoia occurs naturally in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. They can also be found in European countries where they have been cultivated in places like France, Italy, United Kingdom, Denmark as well as in the western Canadian regions, New Zealand and Australia. 

The giant sequoia is scientifically known as Sequoiadendron giganteum.

Where It Grows

• Native to the western Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, USA

• Found in groves at elevations of 5,000–7,000 feet

• Requires well-drained, moist soils

Size & Characteristics

• Height: 164–279 feet tall

• Trunk: Massive, columnar, and fire-resistant

• Bark: Thick, reddish-brown

• Lifespan: Often 2,000–3,000 years

• Cones: Small relative to the tree, but produce thousands of seeds
