Gummi Worms first crawled onto the scene with Trolli’s introduction of the gelatinous creatures in 1986. With their variety of tastes, sizes, and options for sour and or just plain sweet, these treats are one of the most popular candies out there. So much so that these confectionery creepy crawlies have their own holiday, Gummi Worm Day on July 15th! While the sweet holiday’s origins are unclear, the official Trolli twitter account has tweeted in honor of the holiday.

While gummi worms themselves are ‘80s babies, their gummi predecessors stretch even farther back. In 1922, Hans Riegel, Sr. created the gummi bear and launched a little company called Haribo to fame. Gummi products have been a staple of childhood ever since.

Fun ways to celebrate

To celebrate this delicious day, make sure to grab a pack of gummi worms (or two)! Enjoy them alone or toss them into a dirt cake for a yummy, gross-out summer dessert.
