International Albinism Awareness Day

International Albinism Awareness Day is June 13th

International Albinism Awareness Day is observed on June 13th annually, designated by the UN (A/RES/69/170) to bring awareness to the condition of albinism, which is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited difference present at birth where there is a lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin and eyes. 

Today is the day to be educated on this rare condition and it's effects on those who have it. People with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma, especially in cultures where it is shrouded with myths and dangerous beliefs. Because it is so rare, people are not as educated about it and do not understand it causing bulling, and in some cases abandonment and rejection by their own families.
