International Day of Parliamentarism is observed on June 30th annually, designated in 2016 by the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/72/278), to recognize the role of parliaments in national plans and strategies and in ensuring greater transparency and accountability at national and global levels. The day aims to promote understanding and cooperation between parliamentarians and to foster democracy and good governance.
Parliamentary systems have a long and rich history, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. In more recent times, parliamentary systems have been adopted by many countries as a way to ensure democratic governance. Today, there are over 160 parliamentary democracies in the world.
While each parliament is unique, they all share a common commitment to democracy and the rule of law. Parliamentarians play a vital role in representing the interests of their constituents and holding governments to account.
On this International Day of Parliamentarism, let us reaffirm our commitment to democracy and good governance. Let us also pledge to work together to build a better future for all.
