Kiss and Make Up Day was founded in 1992 by Jacqueline Milgate from New York. She intended the holiday to be a scheduled day for people to make amends. “I thought that it would be a neat idea to have a day dedicated to making amends for relationships that need mending,” Milgate told HuffPost. “I come from an Italian family where there was a lot of discord!” She chose Kiss and Make Up Day to occur every Aug. 25, which is her birthday.

In modern usage, the olive branch, or extension of an olive branch, continues this association, signifying a peace offering.
