All About Scottish Fold Cats

Scottish Fold Cats are uniquely cute and known for their folded ears, a genetic trait that can be traced back to 1961 and a farm in Perthshire, Scotland, with a cat named Susie. This cat  had flat ears and then 2 of her kittens also developed the folded ears. A neighboring breeder fell in love with Susie and were given one of the folded-ear kittens and the rest is history. All bona fide Scottish Fold cats trace their pedigree to Susie. (source: CFA)

Surprisingly, not all Scottish Folds get the folded ears. Scottish Fold kittens are not born with the fold. The ears begin to flop at around three to four weeks of age. Those that do not develop folded ears are known as Scottish Straights. The original litters of this breed only had one fold in their ears, but with selective breeding, the fold now has a double or triple crease that causes the ear to lie totally flat against the head. 

The Scottish Fold Cats started in Britain, but has grown in popularity and refined breeding in the United States. The breeding is very specific with a Scottish Fold as they should not be bred with other Folds. Most commonly they are bred with the American Shorthair and British Shorthair. 

Scottish Folds come in a variety of colors, and make great family pets. These cats are known for their gentle nature and love of people. They make great lap cats, and enjoy being petted and played with. If you're looking for a laid-back, affectionate kitty, a Scottish Fold Cat might be the perfect fit for you!

Scottish Fold cats love to play. They enjoy batting around toy balls, playing with feathers, and chasing laser pointers. They are very active cats, and love to run and jump.
