What Is a Strangler Fig?

“Strangler fig” is not one single species, it’s a growth pattern found in several tropical fig species in the Ficus genus.

How It Grows

1. A bird eats a fig and deposits the seed on another tree’s branch.

2. The seed germinates high in the canopy as an epiphyte (a plant growing on another plant).

3. Roots grow downward toward the soil.

4. Once the roots reach the ground, the fig strengthens and thickens.
