All About the Wax Palm
The most famous wax palm is Ceroxylon quindiuense, also known as the Andean wax palm.
The Wax Palm species is the national tree and emblem of Colombia, where it is found in the coffee growing region of Quindío. The Quindío wax palm is the World’s largest palm and can grow up to 200 feet tall. Each stem ring represents a year of growth. It grows in an uncommon habitat for palm trees, 3000 meters above sea level and low temperatures where most palms could not survive.
The wax palm produces an enormous amount of fruits each year, which represents an extraordinary source of food for the fauna. One of the species that call the wax palm home is the Yellow-eared Parrot.
Sometimes called a tree of fertility, the wax palms can be either male or female. It requires pollen to be carried from one to the other for reproduction. This pollination is carried out by tiny beetles which rely on the wax palms for survival.
