Women Rock! Day is January 3rd

Women Rock! Day celebrates the amazing women who have contributed to the world of rock and roll. Commemorating the date when the first woman ever—Aretha Franklin—was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 3rd, 1987, Women Rock! Day shines a special light on the often overlooked women who forever changed the landscape of rock and roll.

The need for a focus on the women in rock and roll became apparent once Aretha Franklin was inducted as the first woman out of 38 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Since then, only about 7% of the inductees have been women, or 69 out of 888 inductees.  In order to qualify for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 25 years must have passed since the artist’s first album or single, and they must show they have strongly impacted rock and roll. The problem is not a lack of a outstanding women in music, but a lack of much-deserved recognition. Women Rock! Day works to remedy this by highlighting and celebrating the world’s rockin’ women.

Ways to Celebrate Women Rock! Day

Vote!  A great way to celebrate Women Rock! Day is to go vote for a woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and work to make history. You can vote on the Hall of Fame’s official website.

Listen! One of the most obvious ways to celebrate is to listen to music by women!  You don’t have to be a fan of Rock and Roll to celebrate Women Rock! Day.  There are excellent women in all genres of music. So if you prefer country, listen to some Dolly Parton classics. Rap? Missy Elliot or Cardi B. Fan of 90’s Grunge? Listen to Hole, led by Courtney Love.
