National Day of Reason is a day to inspire people to use reason to help better their communities. It was created as a response to the National Day of Prayer, which takes place on the same day. National Day of Prayer has an uplifting message but it is a holiday that is exclusive to people of faith. National Day of Reason aims to be a holiday that all people can celebrate regardless of religious affiliation. It is a day to spread reason and to promote making decisions using intellect and rational thought. It is also about supporting separation of church and state, including holidays and observances. When the government sponsors and celebrates National Day of Prayer some people believe it violates that separation.
